Spotlight: Fido’s Debut Single “Awolowo” Dominates Nigeria’s Charts

Breaking boundaries and defying expectations, independent Nigerian artist Fido is making waves with his groundbreaking sound. Drawing from the revolutionary spirit of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and blending it with the infectious energy of Afrobeats stars like Kizz Daniel, Olamide, and Burna Boy, Fido’s unique Afrofusion style is capturing the attention of fans worldwide. His debut single, “Awolowo,” released in August 2024, has rapidly ascended the charts and shaken up the Nigerian music scene.

In just a month, “Awolowo” has amassed over 200,000 Shazam hits, with numbers rapidly closing in on 300,000. The song’s success has been nothing short of meteoric, securing the #1 spot on both Apple Music Lagos and Apple Music Nigeria charts, and landing at #2 on Spotify Nigeria. These achievements signal Fido’s arrival as a major new force in Afrobeats, and listeners are resonating with his innovative, genre-defying sound.

A Song with Depth and Heart

“Awolowo” is more than just a chart-topping hit—it’s a statement of intent. Co-created in June with his close collaborator Iykeelvis, the track is a powerful ode to escapism, youth, and finding personal peace amidst the chaos of life. Fido’s two-minute track, inspired by the iconic Awolowo Road in Ikoyi, takes listeners on a sonic journey where the artist reflects on using cannabis as a means to disconnect from external pressures. But beneath the surface, the song is about much more than letting loose—it’s a deeply personal expression of Fido’s journey and his quest for authenticity.

For me, music is about freedom and expression,” Fido explains. “With ‘Awolowo,’ I wanted to convey my true feelings. On the surface, it might seem like a simple party track, but there’s a deeper meaning—a piece of who I am.

Iykeelvis, the track’s producer, offers insight into how the song came to life. “Initially, ‘Awolowo’ was just a demo for a freestyle video,” he shares. “But one night, I stumbled upon a bassline while experimenting with melodies. Fido, who was gaming at the time, immediately caught onto its potential and crafted something timeless in a matter of moments.”

Chart-Topping Success and the Road Ahead

With “Awolowo” dominating the charts and the Shazam hits soaring past the 200,000 mark in just a month, Fido’s debut single is proving to be more than just a breakout track. As he closes in on 300,000 Shazam hits, the success of “Awolowo” has firmly positioned Fido as a rising star in Afrobeats. This debut not only highlights his talent but also sets the stage for a larger body of work—a forthcoming extended play (EP) that promises to delve deeper into his personal journey and the sacrifices he’s made to follow his musical dreams.
